Dr. MacIlvaine – Holistic Therapist &
Character Analyst in San Diego
Hi. I’m Mary Lou MacIlvaine, Ph.D.
I am a San Diego-based psychologist specializing in deep, personal conversations and the holistic practice of character analysis and mind-body health. I base my approach on how life energy moves or gets stuck in nature. People are part of nature, after all.
I have good eyes and can often see what’s happening inside people emotionally. Some people call it empathy. I work with people to relieve the roots of problems so people can get more satisfaction in life.
I respect the importance of what people tell me with words and even without words. I make a genuine, deep connection with people and situations. I read people well and can often talk to the deepest parts of a person. I understand character, human nature, and the difficulties people get into. I’ve had tragedies myself and have learned from life, aside from my education and professional training. I have a deep understanding of human nature and nature in general. And I’m still learning.
Professionally, I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist (CA 14409). I got my BA from UC Berkeley, with Phi Beta Kappa honors. My doctoral work was at California School of Professional Psychology in Fresno, now Alliant University. I’ve been practicing since 1989 and began preparing for my practice in 1981.
I’m a member of Mensa. As a Mensa psychologist, I use my intelligence holistically to go beyond brain functioning to integrate all our human faculties, especially the autonomic nervous system, our holistic connection with all life. Healthier autonomic functioning lets people live not just in their heads, but in their whole selves. It provides valuable emotional information for knowing what’s happening and making sound decisions. Some of the smartest people with the highest IQs can be among the most scared and tense about life. This is because very bright people more often use intellect to defend against threatening situations. In so doing, they get farther away from their biological cores.
Since receiving my Ph.D., I never stopped studying the mind body connection. This is my life and my passion. I continuously study life energy, health, and psychotherapeutic issues. I have my own private practice and work holistically, meeting with individuals privately, sharing deep conversations, giving whatever feedback fits the moment, and performing character analysis, which approaches psychological and general health issues from a mind-body perspective. “Character” is made up of emotional scars that block a person from higher functioning.
I am an active member of the California Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, and the San Diego Psychological Association (SDPA). I am honored to be listed in the National Register of Psychologists. My private practice is located in Kensington, central to San Diego. My office is in a beautiful, tranquil setting. In my spare time, I enjoy growing roses and getting together with friends . I love art, such as combining words and photographs, as you see on these pages.

Individual therapy treats a person’s own psychological functioning and provides the best opportunity for dealing with character and emotional armoring.
Couples Therapy – Psychotherapy for individuals can help both partners in a couple. The client’s new behaviors make it possible for the partner, also, to act in more functional ways. The best “Couples Therapy” is often individual therapy.
I also provide Child Psychology for children’s behavioral issues, especially regarding pelvic or sexual concerns.
I don’t prescribe medication. However, I coordinate treatment with psychiatrists or other physicians who prescribe antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. I provide equal access to treatment for people of all persuasions, orientations, and ethnic identities. I work with personality disorders if the person is cooperative with treatment. I don’t treat groups or provide court-mandated therapy or other coerced treatment.
